Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 28, 2026
For rules of use (including classrooms), see our Terms of Use.
1. Information We Collect
Personal information
- Account information: Name, email address, age, grade level, and similar profile fields
- Parental information: Parent or guardian email address (for users under 18, as required by our signup and consent flows)
- Authentication: If you sign in with Google OAuth, we receive identifiers and profile details according to that provider’s disclosure and your settings
- Learning data: Challenge attempts, answers, scores, XP, streaks, badges earned, and progress in adventure tracks (levels, missions)
- Usage data: Pages visited, general interaction patterns, and technical logs needed to secure and improve the Service
Classroom and educator-related information
When teachers use virtual classrooms, we additionally collect and store information such as:
- Teacher school profile: School name, school website URL, and school abbreviation (used to identify classes and satisfy product requirements)
- Class metadata: Class name, optional grade level and subject (for suggesting tracks), unique class code, archive status, and related timestamps
- Membership: Which user accounts are linked to which class, join status (e.g. pending or approved), role (e.g. student), and how they joined when that is recorded
- Assignments: Which adventure tracks are assigned to a class, who assigned them, optional due dates, and whether an assignment is marked required
- Teacher-facing analytics: Aggregations and per-student views derived from existing learning data (for example progress in assigned tracks) presented only to the teacher of that class (and authorized platform staff for support and security)
- Teacher-created tracks: Names, descriptions, slugs, icons, colors, structure fields, and publication status; when published, metadata needed for other teachers to discover and assign those tracks
Students do not need to provide separate “classroom-only” accounts; classroom membership is linked to their normal ScienceKid account once they join with a code and are approved.
Automatically collected information
- Device and connection: Browser type, operating system, IP address, and similar technical data
- Cookies and similar technologies: Session cookies for login, security (e.g. CSRF), and preferences
- Analytics: We may use aggregated or de-identified statistics to improve the Service; we do not sell personal information (see below)
2. How We Use Your Information
- Provide the Service: Accounts, challenges, tracks, XP, badges, leaderboards (where you opt in), and email you request or we need for operations
- Classroom features: Display class rosters to the owning teacher, enforce approvals, show students their assigned tracks and due dates, sync progress for assigned tracks, and power teacher dashboards and class progress views
- Safety and security: Detect abuse, fraud, and violations of our Terms; protect users and the platform
- Support: Respond to requests and troubleshoot issues (including classroom-related support)
- Improvement: Understand how features are used in aggregate to improve learning experiences
- Legal compliance: Meet applicable laws and respond to lawful requests
3. Who Can See Classroom-Related Data
- Students see their own dashboard, assigned tracks for classes they belong to, and their own progress.
- The teacher who owns a class can see roster information (such as names and emails associated with member accounts), pending join requests, assignments, and progress information for students in that class as presented in the product.
- Other teachers do not see another class’s roster or dashboards. They may see published tracks and catalog content needed to assign those tracks to their own classes.
- Platform administrators may access data as needed to operate, secure, and support the Service (for example investigating misuse or helping a school with a support ticket), subject to internal access controls.
Classroom tools are designed so that educational visibility is limited to legitimate roles in the product; they are not public profiles and are not shown on public leaderboards by default.
4. Information Sharing
We may share information only in these limited circumstances:
- With parents or guardians: As described in our consent flows and account settings, parents may access or manage a child’s account where applicable
- With teachers (class context): As described in Section 3, for classes the student has joined
- Service providers: Trusted vendors who process data on our behalf under contractual obligations (for example hosting, email delivery), only as needed to provide the Service
- Legal and safety: When required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users, the public, or ScienceKid
- With your consent: When you explicitly agree to additional sharing
- Business transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with notice where required by law
5. Data Security
- Encryption in transit: We use HTTPS for connections to the Service
- Access controls: We limit internal and production access to personal information
- Operational practices: We work to maintain secure infrastructure and review practices over time
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Children’s Privacy (COPPA and similar laws)
- Parental consent: We require verifiable parental consent (or a legally sufficient alternative such as school authorization where applicable and permitted by law) before collecting personal information from children under 13 as required by COPPA
- Limited collection: We collect only what we reasonably need to operate the Service
- No behavioral advertising: We do not use personal information to run targeted behavioral advertising across third-party sites
- Parental rights: Parents may review, delete, or refuse further collection of a child’s information subject to applicable law and technical constraints; contact us using the information below
Schools and teachers: Where a school contracts with us or directs use of the Service in the educational context, additional rules may apply. Teachers should use classroom features only in line with their institution’s policies and applicable student-privacy laws.
7. Your Rights and Choices
- Access and correction: Update profile information in the product where available, or contact us
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account or your child’s account; some information may be retained as required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as security logs) for a limited time
- Class membership: Students can leave a class’s workflow by asking their teacher or contacting support; teachers can remove or reject memberships
- Communications: Opt out of non-essential emails where we provide that option
- Regional rights: Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights (for example under state privacy laws); contact us to exercise them
8. Data Retention
We retain personal information only as long as necessary to:
- Provide the educational services you use
- Maintain classroom records while classes are active or as needed after archiving for legitimate purposes
- Comply with legal obligations and resolve disputes
When you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify personal information within a reasonable period, subject to legal retention requirements.
9. International Transfers
If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where we or our service providers operate. We take steps designed to protect information in line with this Policy and applicable law.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on our website, sending email where appropriate, or showing a notice on the platform. Continued use after the effective date may constitute acceptance of the updated Policy where permitted by law.
